Introduction

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is seeking a skilled DevOps/Software Developer to join the ALICE experiment team. As a member of this team, you will play a crucial role in the development and operation of the experiment's computing systems.

The ALICE experiment is a dedicated heavy ion experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The experiment aims to study the physics of strongly interacting matter at extreme energy densities and temperatures. To achieve this goal, the experiment requires a reliable and efficient computing system.

Key Responsibilities

As a DevOps/Software Developer, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the portfolio of operational tools used in the FLP computing farm
  • Designing and developing new features for the different software components under the responsibility of the O2/FLP project
  • Taking part in the overall ALICE Experiment Operations
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • A Master's degree or PhD in computing science or experimental physics or a related field
  • Experience within a team in the development of large software applications, with a global understanding of the requirements for large distributed computing systems
  • Extensive experience with modern software development environments, including version control, issue tracking, and continuous integration
  • Extensive experience with the Linux operating system
Desirable Skills

The following skills are desirable:

  • Knowledge of data acquisition and control principles
  • Knowledge of system configuration tools, monitoring, configuration, and cluster management tools
  • Knowledge of programming techniques and languages, including modern C++
  • Re-use, refactoring, integration, and porting of existing software
  • Knowledge and application of software life-cycle tools and procedures, including git, JIRA, and Continuous Integration
Language Skills

Proficiency in spoken and written English is required, with the ability to draft technical specifications and scientific reports, as well as deliver oral presentations.
