Unlocking Advanced Technologies in Biological Wastewater Treatment

The increasing capacity of wastewater treatment plants in Switzerland is a pressing issue, with many reaching their maximum treatment and clarification capacities, resulting in occasional nitrification failures. Upcoming legislative changes and population growth will only exacerbate this problem, making it essential to develop advanced technologies that can upgrade existing WWTPs with minimal modifications. One such technology is Densified Activated Sludge (DAS), which offers significant advantages over conventional activated sludge, particularly in intensifying nitrogen removal.

Several full-scale WWTPs in Switzerland have successfully implemented DAS systems, but challenges remain in converting flocs into small granules. The proposed master's thesis/internship aims to address this knowledge gap by conducting a comparative study of multiple full-scale DAS plants in Switzerland. By examining factors such as influent composition, growth and mass transport conditions in unaerated zones, specific operational conditions, and plant configurations, we can gain deeper insights into the factors affecting sludge densification.

Job Requirements
  • A master student with interests in advanced technologies for biological wastewater treatment and programming/data treatment
  • Excellent communication skills in English, with proficiency in German a plus

The project is a collaboration between Eawag and the Zurich WWTP, offering a unique opportunity to work on a cutting-edge topic and contribute to the development of sustainable wastewater treatment solutions. With a preferred starting date as soon as possible, this position presents an exciting chance to make a meaningful impact in the field of environmental engineering.
