PhD Position in Artistic Failures in Renaissance Ceramic Workshops

The Universität Bern is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join its research team in the field of art history. The successful candidate will work on an interrelated subproject of the research program "Artistic Failures in Renaissance Ceramic Workshops", focusing on the regional analysis of Istria.
The PhD candidate will be encouraged to join paleography and archival studies courses and participate in scientific measurements conducted in Pula, Croatia. They will also benefit from funded research stays in important reference libraries in Switzerland and abroad.
The project team will provide intensive collaboration, with regular meetings, joint work on the dissemination of the project's findings through workshops and publications. Residence in Bern or Switzerland is mandatory.
The PhD candidate will conduct fieldwork in Italy and Croatia, attend the Renaissance Society of America annual meeting in Philadelphia, and contribute to the conception and realization of innovative research.
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in art history, conservation of cultural heritage, history, archaeology, or related fields, and fluent oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of Italian, Croatian, and Serbian will be advantageous.

The PhD candidate will be responsible for the writing of a PhD thesis, participation in the activities of the project, and the development of new research methods. They will also be required to participate in a German language course organized by the University of Bern.
The project language is English, and the successful candidate will be expected to work in a team, have reliability, and a willingness to undertake research trips to Italy and Croatia.
