Job Title: Human Rights Officer

Job Summary:

OCHA seeks a Human Rights Officer to support the Thematic Engagement, Special Procedures and Right to Development Division. The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Right to Development Section or his/her designee.

Responsibilities:

  1. Plans and coordinates activities related to the right to development, especially in relation to the UN Programme of Action for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Small Island Developing States, and Landlocked Developing Countries.
  2. Conducts substantive research and analysis of right to development issues/events and assesses their impact on the human rights situation in the above-mentioned countries.
  3. Collects and analyzes human rights data and indicators in the above-mentioned countries, including gender-specific data and indicators.
  4. Provides support to OHCHR field presences; follows-up on implementation of decisions rendered by policy-making bodies.
  5. Ensures the right to development, including its gender equality dimensions considerations, are integrated into the UN Programme of Action mentioned above.
  6. Defines work plan for area assigned in accordance with established terms of reference.
  7. Develops and implements training activities, with attention to gender perspectives.
  8. Represents UN human rights programme at working level meetings.
  9. Directs capacity-building efforts on the right to development and human rights economy in the above-mentioned countries.
  10. Writes a variety of reports, communications, briefings, statements, etc., including to policy-making bodies.
  11. May provide guidance to new/junior staff.

Requirements:

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required. Two years or more experience in providing support to intergovernmental processes and negotiations is required.

Working Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
