We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Scientist to join our team at Empa, a leading research institution in the ETH Domain. As part of our Biosensing and Functional Surfaces Group, you will play a crucial role in developing innovative approaches for blood-based detection of dementia using nanoscale imaging and chemical spectroscopy.
About the PositionThe successful candidate will be responsible for resolving, identifying, and classifying pathological proteins in blood from patients with neurodegenerative diseases. This involves analyzing blood samples from patients at various stages of decline in memory and cognition using label-free nanoscale imaging and chemical spectroscopy. The classified amyloid and tau protein aggregates will then be correlated with clinical results to build a predictive model for identifying individuals at risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases.
Your ProfileTo succeed in this role, you will need a Ph.D. degree in experimental biophysics or a closely related discipline, with experience in applying chemical spectroscopy for protein analytics and morphological characterization of biomolecules in body fluids. You should also have expertise in atomic force microscopy combined with chemical spectroscopy techniques, conducting studies on the role of protein aggregation in neurodegenerative disease progression, and working in a biosafety level 2 laboratory.
Our OfferWe offer a stimulating research environment with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a suite of atomic force microscopes, 3D rotational tomography, and electron microscopes. You will also have the opportunity to interact closely with neurologists at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, where patients for the study will be recruited. The position is available for a duration of two years, with a possible extension to a third year maximum.

Compensation and BenefitsThe estimated annual salary for this position is CHF 80,000 - CHF 100,000, depending on your qualifications and experience. In addition to your salary, you will receive a range of benefits, including a generous pension plan, paid vacation time, and access to our employee wellness program. We also offer a relocation allowance to support your move to Switzerland.
