PhD Researcher in Advanced Manufacturing Control

Job Overview
We are seeking highly motivated PhD students to contribute to our research effort focused on advanced manufacturing systems. Our goal is to develop novel control methods for industrial systems, enabling efficient and sustainable production.
Research Focus
- Online learning-based control and optimization techniques will be applied to advance manufacturing systems, utilizing methods like Reinforcement Learning, Online Convex Optimization, and Iterative Learning Control.
- Hierarchical controller optimization for industrial systems will be developed using bilevel, online, and differentiable optimization methods.
- Control and task planning for advanced manufacturing will be explored using domain adaptation, transfer learning, and large-language models with expert feedback.
- Digital twin-based learning and optimization for manufacturing processes such as 3D Printing, laser cutting, precision motion, and robotic manipulation will be investigated using machine learning, federated learning, and optimization techniques.
The results of this research will be demonstrated on real-world advanced manufacturing and robotic systems in collaboration with industrial partners, aiming to improve efficiency and sustainability.
Your Role
You will work closely with our interdisciplinary team to translate your research ideas into practice, supporting master students, publishing scientific papers, and participating in conferences.
This position is supported by the NCCR Automation and the European Project DMaaST, offering opportunities for national and international collaboration with academic and industrial partners.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you should have a Master's degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial engineering. Proficiency in Python programming, data analysis, and machine learning/optimization libraries is essential. Excellent spoken and written English skills will enable you to navigate our international environment.
Compensation
We offer a competitive salary of approximately CHF 65,000 per annum, reflecting the high demand for skilled professionals in the field of advanced manufacturing control.
