The University of Bern's Astronomical Institute offers two positions for PhD candidates to work on a joint project with the Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut. The goal is to improve the scale realization in future International Terrestrial Reference Frames (ITRF).

One PhD candidate will focus on the GNSS solution, exploring how orbit modelling deficiencies affect the scale and identifying discrepancies between different techniques.

The other candidate will assess various solutions for the ITRF, starting from the most recent ITRF2020 solutions, and evaluate the impact of different ITRF solutions on orbits from altimeter satellites.

This project has significant international implications, as it targets topics currently being worked on by the International Association of Geodesy.

Requirements

The successful candidate should have completed a master's thesis in astronomy, geodesy, physics, or a related field. Experience in GNSS data processing or computer science is an advantage.
