Research Scientist Position

The Institute of Computational Life Sciences at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) is seeking a highly skilled Computational Biologist to join our research team in the field of virus evolution. This exciting opportunity will focus on developing new methods for scalable joint inference of the complete evolutionary history of viruses, including their alignment, tree, and ancestral sequences.

About the Project:
This project aims to improve the reliability of phylogenetic analyses by addressing the apparent circularity between alignment and tree inference. Building upon recent breakthroughs in our team, we will develop a new maximum likelihood method for joint inference under more realistic models that allow multiple residue insertions and deletions. The project will apply these methods to real data, specifically the Swiss HIV Cohort.

Your Role:
As a Computational Biologist, you will work closely with our team to develop and implement novel algorithms and computational tools for virus evolution research. You will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments, analyzing results, and contributing to the preparation of publications. Your strong background in computational science, algorithms, programming, statistics, stochastic modeling or similar will be essential in this role.

Requirements:
We are looking for a motivated and talented individual with a strong background in computational science, algorithms, programming, statistics, stochastic modeling or similar. A working knowledge of C++ and/or Rust is required, and some knowledge of phylogenetics and molecular evolution is an advantage.
