The University of Zurich invites applications for a PhD position within the SNSF-funded project "Caste, Religion and Social Mobility in India". This research project is part of the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies (IAOS) at the University of Zurich.

About the Job

We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral candidate to conduct extensive fieldwork in South Asia and contribute to the development of our understanding of social mobility within lower caste communities.

Your Responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for developing an independent research project on the Ravidassia community, conducting archival research, and participating in workshops and conferences as needed.
  • You will also assist with administrative tasks, participate in research colloquiums, and engage critically with social theory and comparative thinking.

Your Profile

To be successful in this role, you should have a Master's degree in Indian/South Asian Studies or a related discipline with a South Asian regional focus. You should also possess knowledge in qualitative/ethnographic research methods, quantitative methods considered a plus.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Indian/South Asian Studies or related discipline with South Asian regional focus.
  • Knowledge in qualitative/ethnographic research methods, quantitative methods considered a plus.
  • Adequate language skills in a South Asian language, preferably in Hindi and Punjabi or willing to learn Punjabi.
  • Ability to engage critically with social theory, comparative thinking, and independent research.
