Job Description

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a pioneer in particle physics experiments. We are seeking a highly skilled High-Performance Computing Systems Engineer to join our Experimental Physics Department at CERN.

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing system administration tasks for LINUX computers connected to the CMS experiment network, including control room consoles, data centre servers, and virtual machines.

In this role, you will communicate with end-users to understand their needs and help translate these into appropriate solutions, investigate and diagnose operational problems, and participate actively in the strategic design and evolution of the CMS online computing infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform system administration tasks for LINUX computers connected to the CMS experiment network.
  • Communicate with end-users to understand their needs and provide solutions.
  • Investigate and diagnose operational problems.
  • Participate in the strategic design and evolution of the CMS online computing infrastructure.
Requirements:
  • Technical experience in Linux System Administration.
  • Experience in analysing and debugging operational problems in Linux Clusters.
  • Relevant certifications in Linux System Administration and container technologies are a plus.
Competencies:
  • Linux operating system and scripting languages such as Bash, Python.
  • Core services such as LDAP, Kerberos, DNS, DHCP, HAProxy, keepalived.
  • Installation, operation and maintenance of computing hardware (high-end server platforms and desktops).
  • Container technology (Docker, Podman) and orchestrators (Kubernetes).
