PhD Researcher in Clinical Substance Use Epidemiology

The Institute of Primary Health Care of the University of Bern is a renowned institution dedicated to training and fostering the next generation of primary care physicians and conducting research in primary health care, epidemiology, and public health.
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher in clinical substance use epidemiology to join our research team and contribute to the 5-years follow-up visits of the ESTxENDS randomized controlled trial, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work under the guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Reto Auer and associated researchers at the Institute of Primary Health Care.
- Conduct research and coordinate the work of study nurses performing assessments
- Synthesize and analyze quantitative and qualitative data
- Present research at international conferences and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals
- Assist supervisor in various scientific and administrative activities
- Collaborate in other projects at the Institute of Primary Health Care substance use unit
The ideal candidate will possess a strong interest in substance use and counselling, a master's degree in epidemiology, life science, medicine, pharmacy or equivalent, and proficiency in biostatistics and statistical programming (STATA/R). German and English (B1 or more) are required, with French being a plus. The ability to work efficiently, independently and in an interdisciplinary team is essential.
We offer a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment, excellent methodological support, and access to a large network of practicing primary care physicians. The PhD researcher will participate in the Graduate School for Health Sciences academic program and have the opportunity to continue an academic career as a post-doc. The position is available from January 2025, with negotiable starting date, and offered for 4 years. Part-time clinical and research work agreements are negotiable. The PhD stipend is according to SNSF standards.
