Research Assistant for Islamic Legal Traditions Study

The Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies at the University of Bern is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the research team as part of the SNSF Starting Grant Project, TraIL: Tracing Labour in Islamicate Legal Traditions.
This project focuses on the legal history of labour in Islamicate societies and aims to diversify our understanding of labour through textual and digital methods of analysis.
As a PhD researcher, you will work on the third work package, Labour in the Modern State: Concepts and Regulations, investigating how industrialization influenced the legal understanding and conceptualization of labour.
You will conduct fieldwork in Egypt for an extended period and contribute to the development of a database on labour in Islamic legal sources.
- Conceptualizations of Labour: identifying and mapping concepts of work, labour, and related notions within the Islamic legal discourse.
- Women's labour in Islamic Legal Sources: exploring how jurists discussed women's labour and how women dealt with their discussions.
Requirements include completing a PhD in Islamic or Middle Eastern Studies, conducting fieldwork in Egypt for an extended period, and collaborating closely with TraIL project members and colleagues.
A strong commitment to the project, a proven ability to work with historical sources, and excellent prioritization and collegiality skills are also essential.
