**Job Description**:
The Vacuum Surfaces and Chemistry group in the Technology Department (TE-VSC) is in charge of the development, operation and maintenance of vacuum in the entire CERN accelerator system, where particle beams circulate. The Surface Coating and Chemistry section is in charge of the surface preparation and characterization of the surfaces, which are exposed to the beam vacuum. This includes wet chemical surface finishing, thin film coating by physical vapour deposition and surface and chemical analysis.

You will integrate in a team operating a modern surface finishing plant taking care of treatments related to the surfaces and surface properties of many particle accelerators components and operating the related waste water treatment plant.

As a Surface Finishing Technician, your main activities will consist of:

- Performing specialised surface finishing work as precision cleaning for ultra-high-vacuum, etching, electroplating and electroforming on prototype parts and series equipment for the CERN accelerators;
- Developing new processes and their characterization in the context of upgrades of existing accelerators or new CERN projects as High Luminosity LHC and the Future Circular Collider;
- Documenting your work by procedures and presentations;
- Participating to the monitoring and control of the waste water treatment plant.

**Qualifications**:
In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

- You have a Technical Diploma (careers.cern/ttediplomas) in materials science or surface finishing, and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
- If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
- If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
- You should have at least a working knowledge of English OR French.

Specific skills for this project:

- Practical knowledge of surface finishing techniques as cleaning of metals with solvents and detergents, etching of metals, and electroplating;
- Ability to work in a modern workshop on surface finishing with an excellent team work attitude
- Ability to learn on site by treating many different types of parts and developing new procedures.

As a member of a team with experienced technicians and engineers from many CERN Member States in charge of performing surface treatments, you will acquire and/or further develop your skills in:

- Precision cleaning and surface finishing of complex parts of a wide range of different materials;
- Operation of a waste water treatment plant;
- Presentation of your results in written documents and in oral presentations to the team;
- Many other concepts from discussions with the wide panel of scientists and technicians on the CERN
