Four Phd Positions in Our Bern Center of Precision

With this project, we aim to develop gene-/variant-specific risk stratification, obtain new knowledge on gene-/variant-specific disease-mechanisms and disease-modifiers, and develop novel gene-/variant-specific drug and gene therapies for cardiac channelopathies, which represent a frequent cause for sudden cardiac deaths in young individuals. To this end, we will combine clinical and genetic data with innovative disease-specific animal models and human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and cardioid models.

We offer four PhD positions

PhD 1: Patient genetic/genomic data analysis and genetic interaction experiments in Drosophila to identify putative genetic disease-modifiers (Group Prof. Christiane Zweier)

PhD 2: Investigation of putative non-coding genetic disease modifiers in mouse models and the generation and testing of variant-specific hiPSC-CM and cardioid models (Group Prof. Marco Osterwalder)

PhD 3: Generation and testing of variant-specific zebrafish models (Group Prof. Nadia Mercader)

PhD 4: Electrophysiological characterizations of ion channel variants in transgenic rabbit and further preclinical models in vivo, on whole heart and cellular levels (Group Prof. Katja Odening).

The positions 2-4 all additionally include the development and testing of mechanism-based drug and/or gene therapies for cardiac channelopathies.
- has a strong interest in genetic, functional and/or cardiac research and its clinical translation
- has keen interest and experience in experimental (animal) models
- possesses at least basic knowledge in genetics, molecular methods, and electrophysiological and imaging techniques

The applicant should submit a CV (including contact details of two referees) and a one-page motivation letter, highlighting her/his experiences in the above-mentioned points and indicating his/her motivation to join a particular PhD position (1-4). In addition, she/he should indicate which position(s) would be of interest.
