**Presentation**:
The Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDYST) of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment of the University of Lausanne opens a position of Graduate Assistant in Microbiology of extreme environments.

From a scientific perspective the drilling project aims to explore and interpret biological and mineral signatures and their respective evolution due to ongoing microbial activity and diagenesis in the sediments of Nam Co, Tibet. To do so, sedimentary structures as well as solid and fluid geochemistry will be correlated with the diversity and activity of microbial communities within the sediment column. Discriminating between the influence of environmental conditions and diagenetic overprinting by microbial and tectonic activity on mineral
- and isotope-based reconstructions will assist in generating more robust interpretations of the past climate and environmental conditions of the Tibetan Plateau. The interdisciplinary approach will shed light into mineralization processes impacted by terrigenic fluid emanation and will broaden our understanding of the genetic diversity and activity of the deep biosphere driving the cycling of carbon and other elements in the deep subsurface.

Contract length : 1 year, renewable 1 x 3 years, maximum 4 years

Activity rate : 100%

Workplace : Lausanne Mouline (Geopolis building)

**Your responsibilities**:
Field work at high altitude (Tibetan Plateau; 4700 m asl) and participation to international workshops and conferences is expected.

**Your qualifications**:

- MSc degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related domain.
- Experience in microbial cultivation and sterile laboratory techniques is a plus.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills. French in an asset, but not required.
- Able to work both independently and collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary environment
- Adaptable, able-bodied, and enthusiastic about fieldwork
