**Interpretability-Guided Deep Learning for Medical Image Analysis: Applications to Medical Image Classification, Retrieval and Segmentation**:
Your job:
In this project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, your role is to research innovative ways to employ information stemming from interpretability methods used in deep learning to jointly improve model training, performance, and model interpretability. Through this new learning paradigm, we expect to make contributions to fighting the black-box nature of deep learning systems while fostering improved generalization, fast learning rates, and model performance. The findings will be applied to three different and important medical image computing tasks of multi-class medical image classification, medical image retrieval, and multi-sequence medical image segmentation, using own and publicly available medical imaging datasets, featuring multi-site-multi-class scans, and multisequence MRI datasets of brain tumor patients receiving radiation therapy.
As research scientist involved in this project you will be working actively with radiologists, neuroradiologists, as well as with biomedical engineers and other computer scientists to develop and evaluate the researched solution.

Your experience:
Applicants holding a master's degree in computer sciences, biomedical engineering, or similar, and with demonstrable previous experience in machine learning and medical imaging, are invited to apply.

The research will be carried out at the Medical Image Analysis group of the University of Bern. The group is also part of the newly created Center for Artificial Intelligence on Medicine (CAIM), a strong initiative of the University of Bern, Inselspital, Bern, the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine (SITEM), and it is immersed in a very active biomedical engineering network at the University of Bern.

Duration: Full-time position secured for the entire PhD duration.
