- This is your Quest. Deepen your knowledge and expertise faster than anywhere else on earth. Take Part_
**Job Description**:
Intra-beam scattering affects the beam quality of high brightness beams. This concerns the high intensity proton beams in the LHC, as well as the heavy ion beams all across the CERN accelerator chain. Tools for numerical integration (tracking) of macroparticle distributions have been developed at CERN to model and study this effect. In this Quest, you will:
- contribute to the consolidation of these tools and their integration into state of the art tracking codes
- benchmark simulation tools with experimental data from the LHC and the injectors
- study the impact of noise (power converter ripple, transverse damper, crab cavity noise) on transverse emittance growth in the LHC
- include this intra-beam scattering in accurate predictions of the luminosity evolution in the LHC
**Qualifications**:
Eligibility criteria:
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
- You have a Master’s degree and between 2 and 6 years’ experience or PhD with up to 3 years of relevant experience in applied physics or other related field;
- You should have a working knowledge of English or French.
Skills and/or knowledge:
- You have knowledge in beam dynamics, optics design, beam instrumentation.
- You have experience in experimental techniques and analysis of data from beam measurements.
- You have knowledge of incoherent effects such as intra-beam scattering, and/or noise effects.

- Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
- Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract;
- 30 days of paid leave per year.
