Scientist in “Computational Geo-Ecology” 80-100% (w/m/d)

You conduct research in the field of Computational Geo-Ecology and Geographic Information Sciences by analysing and predicting key drivers of forest status and trends across spatial scales. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence you model and upscale abiotic (e.g. microclimate, local soil properties) and biotic (e.g. plant functional traits) factors with remote and proximal sensing. This position includes (i) carrying out research in this field, (ii) publishing your research in international and national scientific journals, (iii) acquisition of third-party money for national and international research projects and (iv) participation in research projects at national and international levels (e.g. international consortia - EU). Lecturing at university level, supervising doctoral and master's theses, organizing workshops, as well as outreach activities will be also part of your tasks.

The position requires a PhD in forest or environmental sciences as well as detailed knowledge of forest ecology and modelling with GIS and remote sensing. Advanced experience in statistical modelling and machine learning is required. A track record in scientific publication in the field, experience with the acquisition of funding and leading of scientific projects is needed. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and very good knowledge of a Swiss national language are necessary. Furthermore, you enjoy working in a team, have strong conceptual skills and are accustomed to developing your own research ideas.
