The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) is a leading institute at the Medical Faculty, with an outstanding national and international reputation for excellence in research, methodology and teaching. ISPM aims to advance and disseminate evidence-based knowledge to improve health and the prevention of disease in the population as well as in specific patient groups. The research of the ISPM influences health strategy at cantonal, national, and international levels. Education, training, continuing professional development and the training of specialists in Public Health are integral to the ISPM's mission.

The new director will be an innovative, authoritative, and visionary leader in epidemiology and public health. The director will have an outstanding, internationally recognized reputation in research and teaching and a strong record of attracting competitive research funding from national and international funders. She/He will have broad methodological expertise as well as expertise and a strong portfolio of ongoing research in her or his specialist area. The director will also support patient-oriented clinical research at the University of Bern and the University Hospitals through close collaboration with the Department of Clinical Research (DCR) and the Bern Institute of Primary Care (BIHAM).

Proven management and supervision experience with strong communication and organisation skills as well as the ability to integrate oneself into existing structures are important elements of the director's profile. Knowledge of the German language is desirable but not a fundamental requirement.

A degree in medicine or a comparable degree in life science is essential. The habilitation or an equivalent academic qualification is required. The ISPM is heavily involved in teaching, therefore didactic competences in teaching and a strong commitment to the promotion of young scientists are essential.
