Postdoc “Modeling of glide-snow avalanches” 80-100% (f/m/d)
In the context of a SNF-funded project on the formation of glide-snow avalanches you develop a modeling approach for the formation and dynamics of glide-snow avalanches. You will extend the existing Material Point Method approach to glide-snow avalanches to better understand glide-snow avalanche release and dynamics. In addition to modelling, you will design an experiment for measuring the coefficient of friction between the snow slab and the glide surface as a function of the liquid water content within the basal snow layers. You will supervise a Master’s student to perform the experiments. You closely work with two doctoral students who study conditions for glide-snow avalanche formation in the field and the cold lab, and also model the pertinent processes below the slope scale. The position is funded for two years.
You hold a doctoral degree in cryospheric sciences, computational mechanics or a related field. You are experienced with numerical modelling and familiar with experimental work. Very good knowledge of English and organizational skills are expected. Furthermore, you are team-oriented and show initiative. You bring with you an independent way of working and enjoy scientific work.
