- In the lab you will synthesize novel compounds (multi milligram scale of end products in multistep synthetic sequences) to be tested in biological assays. These results will direct us to go into a next cycle of Design - Make - Test - Analyze (DMTA) to obtain further improved molecules. Your ability to make these compounds fast and in sufficient amounts will be essential to accelerate these cycles.
- This role is limited for 6 months.**Your key responsibilities**:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- You are planning and conducting common experiments (synthetic reactions, purifications, analytics) according to a detailed program outlined by the supervisor in a largely independent fashion. For more complex experiments you can seek advice from your supervisor or an experienced colleague. You are familiar to work under inert atmosphere and exclusion of moisture
- You perform multiple basic reactions or experiments in a parallel fashion and are able to optimize reaction conditions (e.g. variation of temperature, reaction time, solvent)
- For the purification of your products you select the appropriate method and chose suitable conditions. You have experience with automated chromatography systems
- For following reactions, and to characterize reaction products you collect appropriate analytical data (e.g. NMR, LC/MS, TLC). The interpretation of simple data you do by your own and for more complex data you get help from team members
- You recognize the hazards associated with reagents, products and solvents and actively seek additional safety information or when unsure, consult your supervisor or a more experienced colleague. You work in tidy and safe manner and respect all health and safety rules
- Your experiments and results you document in a electronic lab journal in English (business language at Novartis) in sufficient details that will allow others to reproduce the experiments and results in the future

**What you’ll bring to the role**:

- Fluent English, there are many German or French speaking colleagues who like to speak with you in their mother tongue but this is naturally not a must
- You bring up wishes, questions and problems openly and directly and are not shying away to seek for help and advice when needed
- As a team player you contribute your part to common tasks like lab maintenance and as a great colleague you help others hands on, with your own experience and with advice
