Postdoctoral Researcher in Fish Movement Ecology (80-100%)

Applications are sought from individuals with research experience in ecology and evolution. Applicants should have a doctorate (or expect to finish their PhD late 2023) in a relevant field of biology, ecology, or environmental science and a strong interest in fish movement ecology. Skills in fish acoustic telemetry are especially beneficial for this position. Excellent communication and writing skills in English and ability to work in a team are essential.

The PostDoc will work on the project “Influence of climate change on fish movement patterns in the Swiss Rhine-Aare River network”, funded partly by the Swiss Federal Office of Environment (FOEN) and partly by Eawag. We are at the same time for the same project searching for a PhD student, a technical assistant and a scientific assistant, primarily responsible for outreach.

With this project, we will describe the movement patterns of some of the most common, the most widespread and the most vulnerable species of riverine fish in Switzerland and how they may be affected by climate change. We will specifically focus on the extent to which different populations of the target species perform seasonal migrations and describe the temporal and spatial affinities of these migrations. Furthermore, we will investigate how the fish migrations are influenced by environmental variables, which are likely to be modified with climate change. Lastly, we will investigate how fish in different sections of the river network are able to find refuge for high water temperatures during periods of temperature stress in the main stem of the rivers. We will conduct all the projects by constructing a network of almost 200 hydrophone receivers across the river network and tagging individual fish with acoustic transmitter tags equipped with temperature sensors.

This is a 36 months Postdoctoral position with potential for extension. The position will be hosted by the River Fish Ecology group and the FishEc Department.

The main work place is at Eawag in Kastanienbaum, Lucerne, which besides the Fish Ecology and Evolution Department hosts research groups from the Department Surface Waters and offers a beautiful workplace at the shores of Lake Lucerne, a friendly international working climate and a strong cross-disciplinary research environment. We share a common interest in understanding the principles of the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and their susceptibility and adaptability to changing environments, and a common concern for sustainable management of ecosystems and biodiversity. Each department on its own aims at contributing cutting edge science to the development of theory in ecology, evolution and environmental sciences.
