**20-40%**:
The way social media frame contentious topics can encourage social engagement and political action to address grievances and manage intergroup conflict. However, this can also increase polarization by inflaming grievances and weakening social trust, to the point of motivating conflict and violence.
The project analyzes the evolution of online information on violent extremism and its effects on public opinion and behaviour.
**Responsibilities**:
The research assistant provides technical support for the extraction, processing, and analysis of social media data (primarily Twitter) concerning the impact of media coverage of violent extremist events on public opinion.
**Profile**:
The position is suitable for MA students who are interested in researching how media discourses, polarization, and echo-chamber effects relate to the threat of violent extremism and how they challenge democracies.
- Enrolled in computer science, or a similar degree program (MA) at the University of Bern
- Excellent working knowledge of Python for Accessing API's.
- Experience in working with Twitter or other social media data is an advantage.
- Knowledge of NLP techniques to analyse topics and sentiments.
- High degree of self-motivation and excellent work ethic
- Good oral communication skills in English
