The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The CITES Secretariat is administered by UNEP and is located at the Geneva duty station. Under the supervision of the Chief of the Science Unit (SU), the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
**Responsibilities**:
1. Provide assistance and support for the planning and implementation of the programs and activities on scientific matters of the CITES Secretariat:

- Provides assistance to the Unit for the development, maintenance, and updating of databases, the administration of projects, and the preparation of documentation for, and the organization of conferences and meetings using English, French, and Spanish.
- Assists in the coordination, monitoring and evaluation of programmes/projects; carries out periodic status reviews; identifies issues and initiates requisite follow-up actions; prepares revised budget estimates; reports on budget revisions; expenditures and obligations; verifies the availability of funds; ensures necessary approval and entry in the computerized budget system; initiates financial authorizations for expenditures.
- Researches, compiles, analyses, summarizes and presents basic information and technical data on specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues.
- Drafts correspondence and communications related to all aspects of programme/project administration, including work plans and budgets, revisions and other related issues, as well as prepares unit contributions for a variety of periodic reports.
- Serves as focal point for coordinating, monitoring and expedition of programme/project implementation activities.

2. Assists with preparation for meetings of the CITES Conference of the Parties (CoP), Standing Committee (SC) and Animals and Plants Committees (AC and PC):

- Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings.
- Serves as the focal point for administrative coordination on specific meetings and project implementation activities undertaken by the team, involving liaison with diverse organizational units to initiate requests, obtain necessary clearances, process and follow-up on administrative actions, e.g. recruitment and appointment of personnel, travel arrangements, training/study tours, authorization of payments, disbursement of funds, procurement of equipment and services.
- Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books, and publications.
- Collects organizes and disseminates relevant UN and media information.

3. Provide administrative assistance to the Unit for the development and implementation of the Unit’s program of work:

- Provides general office assistance for the team; responds to complex information requests and inquiries; reviews, logs, and routes incoming correspondence; sets up and maintains files/records; handles routine administrative tasks, such as travel arrangements for workshops and meetings.
- Reviews, stores, classifies, and maintains relevant computerized databases.
- Sorts, consolidates, extracts, and processes data and enters it into relevant databases.
- Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts, and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.

4. Other duties as assigned;
- Provides guidance/training to new and junior staff.
- Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
- Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
- Performs other related work as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the Uni
