The Research Unit Forest Dynamics assesses the effects of changing environmental conditions on forest ecosystem functioning. Our multidisciplinary team conducts innovative research to address pressing environmental challenges. From

**6 months**, we are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic
intern
You will be an integral part of a research project that aims to detect a "defoliation fingerprint" in tree rings. This unique opportunity will allow you to work with a team of experts in novel dendrochronological, phenological, and ecophysiological approaches, and contribute to new insights into environmental science and climate change studies. The job will involve processing samples, conducting laboratory work, and analysing and reporting scientific findings. Your responsibilities will include assisting in the processing of tree-ring cores from different tree species and locations, as well as archaeological material to create tree-ring chronologies. You will be responsible for preparing samples for isotope analysis, which involves mechanical and chemical procedures. Additionally, you will collaborate with the project team to conduct a literature review on the impact of defoliation events, such as late spring frost, insect outbreaks, and other stressors on hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in tree rings. One of the main tasks is to maintain accurate records of all procedures and findings and analyse the data from tree-ring samples while working closely with project supervisors and fellow researchers to engage in discussions and contribute to the project's success.
As a requirement for this position, you should be enrolled in or have recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental science, forestry, biology or a related field and have a strong interest in forest ecology, dendrochronology, isotope analysis, or environmental research. Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques is a plus. You should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and be self-motivated, and willing to learn. You will gain valuable hands-on experience in a cutting-edge research project, exposure to state-of-the-art laboratory techniques and isotope analysis, and the opportunity to work alongside a team of experts in the field. You will work in a supportive and collaborative environment and receive a stipend for the duration of the internship. Your working place will be at WSL, which is located in Birmensdorf (approximately 20 minutes outside of Zurich). Dr. Valentina Vitali and Dr. Yann Vitasse will supervise you, and you will be part of the Ecosystem ecology group in the Unit Forest Dynamics.
