Innovation Ecosystem Lead - First Movers Coalition

The World Economic Forum, committed to improving the state of the world, is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. The Forum engages the foremost political, business and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

The First Movers Coalition (FMC) is a global initiative harnessing the purchasing power of companies to decarbonize seven “hard to abate” industrial sectors that currently account for 30% of global emissions: Aluminium, Aviation, Chemicals, Concrete, Shipping, Steel, and Trucking; along with speeding the adoption of innovative Carbon Removal technologies. To decarbonize at the speed needed to keep the planet on a 1.5-degree pathway, the “hard to abate” sectors require nascent clean technologies that are not yet competitive with current carbon-intensive solutions. The First Movers Coalition, through the purchasing commitments of its members, seeks to accelerate these clean technologies to commercial scale by 2030.

UpLink is a digital platform hosted by the World Economic Forum that enables the next generation of environmentally, socially and ethically minded entrepreneurs and funds, start-ups and young innovators from around the world to solve society’s most pressing challenges as set out in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UpLink convenes a growing innovation ecosystem among entrepreneurs, experts, investors and partners to help leading organisations and companies catalyse and deliver mission-driven innovations and new business models to tackle the issues that the SDGs must conquer by 2030.

Why we are recruiting

The Forum’s First Mover Coalition and UpLink teams look to build a growing ecosystem of key multi-stakeholder partners and organizations that enable innovative start-ups in the decarbonization space to accelerate and scale impact.

The initial priority focus of this role will be on sustainable aviation fuel, and will broaden to carbon dioxide removal technologies and other ‘hard to abate’ industrial sectors.

Reporting Lines & Interactions

This role reports to the FMC Aviation Sector Lead with a dotted line to the Head of Curation, UpLink working in close collaboration with the UpLink Impact Lead - Nature & Climate and the other FMC Sector Leads.

Main Responsibilities:
SUPPORTING PARTNER AND INVESTOR ENGAGEMENT
- Lead the strategy and value proposition articulation to engage key stakeholders from the public and private sector and build a multi-stakeholder community (complementary organisations, other similar platforms, NGOs, accelerators, impact investors, VCs and experts) in support of innovation in decarbonization, ecopreneurs and decarbonization-focused funds.
- Facilitate introductions and meaningful collaboration opportunities for respective UpLink ecopreneurs and decarbonization-focused funds with Impact Partners, Investors and Forum platforms, communities, and networks.

INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM BUILDING
- Support the innovation ecosystem mapping, pipeline building and active outreach and formalizing collaborations with the identified stakeholders in the decarbonization innovation space
- Develop a pipeline and network of mission-aligned external organizations, with resources to support ecopreneurs either financially or otherwise, committed to supporting UpLink FMC Challenges
- Support the design and programming of key activities by nominating experts, investors, incubators, or organizations to get involved with the programming for UpLink ecopreneurs (i.e. investor and expert roundtables, virtual sessions, etc.). And ensure links to broader Forum and decarbonization-specific events and sessions.

CROSS-TEAM COLLABORATION
- Collaborate closely with the UpLink team, in the development of a strategy and pathway to mainstream, accelerate, and scale innovation within the Forum’s FMC and other platforms
- Collaborate closely several team across the Forum around the identification and support of partners to help accelerate and scale the impact of the UpLink FMC Innovation Ecosystem.
- Work with the World Economic Forum media and video team to produce videos and communication material in support of the decarbonization innovation ecosystem.

Preferred Requirements and Experience
- 7-10 years of professional experience in the public sector, private sector or civil society, international working experience is a plus
- Subject-matter expertise: work experience in sustainable aviation fuels, industry decarbonization or hard to abate sectors. Familiarity with the international climate, decarbonization sphere and sustainable development agenda is a must.
- Master’s, political science, environmental science, engineering, MPA, MBA or equivalent degree in business.
- Familiarity with handling public-private partnerships and multi-stakeholder platforms
