**Responsibilities**:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 450 banks, insurers and investors. For over 28 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to help the financial industry align with and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and with that take on the crucial role it must play in achieving a sustainable future.

The consultant will work on the implementation of UNEP FI annual work plan in Japan through the following project task in coordination with Industry and Thematic Lead. UNEP FI currently does not have the internal capacity to undertake these activities, and hence outside expertise is required for this purpose.

The consultant will work with UNEP FI to engage with its membership in Japan stimulating involvement of members in defining and delivering UNEP FI projects (consultations, surveys, training, research etc.). They will also enable UNEP FI to identify and deliver complementary activities specifically for the country and region if/as necessary through close collaboration with Industry Coordinators and Thematic advisory groups.

Specifically, the consultant will allow UNEP FI to attract Japanese members & stakeholders to provide inputs to projects, communicate progress and disseminate outputs.

Finally, they will ensure UNEP FI’s presence and involvement in key national events and conferences and Japanese members’ involvement in UNEP FI’s work plan and Regional Roundtable.

Objectives:
To assist UNEP FI Japanese signatories to implement their respective sustainability plans and to encourage non-signatory institutions to join.

Expected outputs:

- Members and potential members in Japan are provided timely and sufficient support from UNEP FI secretariat.
- Members in Japan informed and engaged in UNEP FI’s sustainable finance agenda and activities through the effective use of UNEP FI public and member-only websites, as primary communication tools. Members are informed of key information including Japanese member activities and major policy developments on sustainable finance in Japan, have access to Japanese translated materials, event announcements, and any other useful information such as UNEP FI governance and administration.
- Support PRB signatories for implementing and maintaining commitment to the principles. The support includes organizing meetings to follow up global and/or regional webinars, attending individual and feedback support meetings to help communication, coordinating meetings in on
- demand basis, and preparing for materials and recorded videos with subtitles in Japanese languages.
- Information sharing and collaboration undertaken with partners and key stakeholders including relevant industry associations, Ministries, PRI, PFA, FSA and in relation to the enabling environment for sustainable finance and market leadership in Japan.
- UNEP FI secretariat informed of Japanese members’ priorities and supported on engagement with members on strategy and work plan implementation. Information is shared with the Regional Co
- ordinator on members’ involvement in activities, and participation in the global and regional work programme. Inactive members are engaged. Secretariat updated on members’ sustainable finance news and monitor information on members and potential members.
