mBiomR; Unravelling the Mechanisms and Dynamics Underlying the Response of Intestinal Bacteria from the ESKAPE group to Antimicrobial Treatment
**Your Tasks and Perspectives**:
- Identifying antibiotic resistance patterns of ESKAPE pathogens and determining their mode of resistance mechanisms
- Perform molecular experiments on resistant Gram-negative pathogens
- Genome-editing (cloning and Crispr/Cas9)
- Interdisciplinary collaborations and active contribution in shaping the project
- Willingness to draft own projects, on which you will work independently
- Preparing findings for presentation at local and international conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals
**What you bring to this position**:
- Master's degree in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or related fields
- Basic experience of designing and running experiments with microbial cultures in the laboratory and hands-on experience with key biochemical and molecular biological methods
- Highly motivated person that is both eager to work independently and to actively contribute to an interactive and supportive team and therein to a positive lab environment
- A strong background and interest in microbiology and preferably in antimicrobial resistance of Gram-negative pathogens
- Creativity and self-directed problem solving are key to success in this position as well as excellent teamwork and communication skills in English

**About us**:
A PhD position for three and a half years, starting in April 2023, is available at the Research Laboratory of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology, based in the laboratories of the Medical Research Centre of Kantonsspital St.Gallen, in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
Our project investigates the distribution dynamics of Gram-negative pathogens and Enterococcus faecium belonging to the “ESKAPE” group in the gut, their adaptation and the resistance mechanisms, in response to antimicrobial exposure. In addition, we will examine
the gut microbiome recovery after completion of antibiotic treatment and the influence of the hospital environment on human gut composition. This project is a largescale metagenomics, multi-assay study in collaboration with von Mering Group at the University of Zurich. The PhD salary will be according to Swiss National Science Foundation standards.
