What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation to ensure a concerted, rational, and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Your role

The Physiotherapist is a full member of the interdisciplinary team providing patient-centered care to service users needing rehabilitation support in hospital and/or rehabilitation centers patients and ICRC patients/service users needing rehabilitation services. Physiotherapist is responsible for all physiotherapy-related activities at the field level from acute to rehabilitation and re-integration stages. The physiotherapist assesses and provides physiotherapy services to a population needing physical rehabilitation within an ICRC-run or an ICRC-supported structure during emergency and non-emergency situations. Furthermore, ensures quality by implementing ICRC physiotherapy standards and adjusts professional activities based on the results of the ongoing monitoring & evaluation process as well as on the project priorities.

Main responsibilities

Deliver physiotherapy services that are timely and sustainable in the long term and organize all resources within an interdisciplinary approach.
In coordination with the hospital / PRP teams, identify, address, and relay the health concerns of individuals and communities.
Build a community of practice, advocate for ongoing learning based on good practice, develop professional networking, and advocate health promotion activities.
Supervise, coach, and train team members involved in delivering physiotherapy services.
Implement and improve appropriate professional standards and organize training programs based on reflective practice.
Ensure the continuum of care by referring individuals to the appropriate structure after discharge.
Dialogue, communicate, and report on rehabilitation-related contexts, needs, and programs, both internally and externally.

Education and experience required

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Physiotherapy, with a valid license to practice.
Minimum of 2 years of recent clinical experience in a hospital and/or rehabilitation center.
Good command of English. A good command of a second language is a strong asset (French, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese).
Previous experience in international humanitarian projects.
Previous experience in humanitarian settings and low-and-middle-income countries an asset.
Experience in providing training and teaching as an asset.
Experience in managing amputation, cerebral palsy, clubfoot, and spinal cord injuries an asset.
Good command of computer tools.

Desired profile and skills

Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in a complex environment.
Previous experience in international humanitarian projects, public health projects, or other related training in a low-resource setting (NGO, IO, or charity organization).
Experience in teaching and transfer of knowledge and skills or clinical research
Public Health or other related training
Positive, flexible, and able to adapt to challenging living conditions and/or unstable security environments.
Previous experience within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement is an asset.

Our operational context

In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals.
Our field staff members must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field.
Our field staff members are prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e., no spouse, partner, children, or dependents) for at least the first 24 months.
In line with our security guidelines, our staff members must hold a manual driving license.
