This position is in the Collection and Analysis Section (CAS) of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under International Law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM). The Collections and Analysis Section is responsible for gathering evidence within the context of the IIIM's structural investigation and generating analytical products that can be shared with competent jurisdictions. The investigator is under the overall supervision of the Senior Legal Officer (Collections and Analysis) and under the direct supervision of the P4 Investigation Team Leader in CAS. The incumbent will be responsible for planning and conducting investigations as part of a multi-disciplinary team of legal officers and analysts charged with generating analytical products that can be shared with competent jurisdictions to advance ongoing and/or future investigations and prosecutions.

**Responsibilities**:
Within delegated authority, the Investigator will be responsible for the following duties:

- Undertakes investigations in cases involving serious breaches of international humanitarian law, such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, rape and sexual and gender
- based violence, including undertaking field missions, when required.
- Identifies, engages and manages relationships with a diverse range of investigative sources, including intermediary NGOs.
- Obtains signed statements from survivors and vulnerable victims, including in difficult or hostile environments and circumstances, and through the use of interpreters. Conducts interviews with other types of witnesses relevant to the investigation.
- Reviews and analyzes documentary evidence and determines information necessary for inclusion in interviews. Coordinates as necessary with government or state officials for the conduct of interviews.
- Participates in briefings, presentations, and conferences with investigations staff, other members of the IIIM, as well as actors external to the IIIM, including governmental officials, civil society actors, UN entities and other partners relevant to the collection of information and evidence.
- Searches for, identifies, collects, records and preserves physical evidence ensuring that all potential or relevant evidence is gathered and secured, and that all necessary evidential chains of custody are established and maintained. Assists in the presentation of evidence in proceedings, if required.
- Prepares complete and concise investigation reports, briefs and files, incorporating as necessary maps, graphs, charts, tables, images and other illustrative devices.
- Prepares thorough mission plans and reports.
- Conducts open-source research. Searches and registers sources, evidence, data, and information in evidence management databases.
- Conducts additional inquiries requested of, or by IIIM.
- Performs administrative functions pertaining to the implementation of policies and procedures for the IIIM.
- Assists in forensic projects when required.
