The Position

The Asset Economist (AE) ensures smooth implementation of the refinery monthly operating plan, using LP (linaer programing) models to maximise commercial value through optimization of crude and feedstock intakes, component blending and product manufacturing options.

As the first-line contact point towards Varo’s refining assets Bayernoil (BO) or Cressier (CRE) on all operational day to day matters, the AE ensures implementation of short term economic steers and applies ad-hoc problem solving skills to provide efficient and creative solutions to operating challenges.

Moreover, the AE keeps supply, logistics and trading organizations aligned and provides weekly updates on the progress of monthly plan implementation.

Your key responsibilities

**Prepare the monthly operating plan**
- Using refinery linear programming (LP) models, derive economically optimized
- Monthly mass balances and operating instructions for the asset
- Crude batching to define refineries crude diet composition
- Determine demand and timing of feedstock & intermediate imports / exports
- Monitor deviations between LP plan and actuals and challenging the refinery constraints

**Running the daily refinery business**
- Ensure smooth daily operations & implementation of monthly refinery production plan
- Align Varo-internal stakeholders by preparing and leading regular update meetings on refinery status and economics
- Provide Import-/Export-economics for feedstock and products
- Anticipate potential challenges and show creativity in solving problems. Identify and capitalize on optimization opportunities.

**Participating in regular refinery meetings**
- Maintain good relationship with key stakeholders at refining assets
- Attend and participate in regular on-site meeting

Your profile - Essential

knowledge, skills &
abilities
- Team player with commercial mindset and excellent communication skills
- Experience in refinery planning & economics or similar position
- Fluent in English & working knowledge of French or German an advantage
- Previous experience with running and analyzing LP models a strong advantage
- Quick learning and adaptable
- Strong analytical & problem solving skills, creative thinking
- Proactive personality with the ability to take decisions
- Capable of prioritizing tasks and meeting critical deadlines
- Resilience to work under pressure

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor or Master degree in engineering, science or economics or equivalent experience
- At least 3 years of experience in refining or related industries
