Lonza’s Small Molecules Division is seeking a driven innovation leader to join its Global R&D team. This opening for Associate Director, Advanced Chemistry Technology is based at our Visp, Switzerland site.

As Associate Director, Advanced Chemistry Technology, you will conceive, develop, and implement new platform technologies that facilitate active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) synthesis. You will deliver new synthetic methods, catalyst systems, and products that improve the efficiency, economy, and sustainability of API manufacturing. These innovations will impact all phases of development and manufacturing - Preclinical, Clinical, and In-market Supply. You will play an integral role in R&D’s mission to develop innovative technologies that accelerate clients’ groundbreaking therapeutics to patients.

**GENERAL DESCRIPTION**

Participates in research, development and transfer of synthetic chemistry technology innovations within Lonza. Possesses the capability to design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and clearly communicate results to both internal and external R&D stakeholders. Applies knowledge of fundamental science to help provide innovative solutions for challenging problems related chemical synthesis technologies (e.g., synthetic methodology development, catalysis, automation and informatics assets). Assists in the creation of intellectual property and achievement of strategic deliverables. Serves as a value creation leader in the Small Molecules Global R&D organization.

**JOB TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Assists in defining strategy to establish new capabilities aimed at addressing unmet technical needs. Identifies and recommends action on internal and external technical opportunities to advance strategic organizational goals.
- Leads efforts to innovate and to establish intellectual property in area(s) of primary expertise. Contributes to strategic planning with internal teams to define project scope and direction.
- Successfully completes priority projects of high importance to the company. Leverages deep and broad scientific expertise to solve multifaceted problems.
- Operates primarily as an individual contributor but will regularly, formally or informally, lead one or more colleagues on projects.
- Takes responsibility for budget adherence and outcomes for projects, championed and assigned. As a project leader, assigns day-to-day activities to project teams, in coordination with the Head of R&D Advanced Chemistry Technologies. Stewards deliverables’ execution within project team(s).
- Provides performance feedback on performance evaluation for project team members.
- Communicates scientific advancements in his/her/their portfolio projects to R&D leadership team and to business executives on cross-functional project Steering Committees.
- Communicates scientific advancements outside of the organization through presentations to clients or at conferences, and by writing papers for internal or external publication.
- Works with substantial autonomy and with commensurate transparency

**KEY REQUIREMENTS**
- Ph.D. with several years’ relevant experience or B.S./M.S. with 10+ years’ related experience
- Preferred area of study: Synthetic Organic Chemistry
- Language: English fluency; German business-level proficiency or willingness to learn is an added value
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to excel in multidisciplinary environment
- Entrepreneurial. Can define and assert the business value of chemical innovations.
