The Office of the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is
the Secretariat department responsible for strengthening international human rights
mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and
strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and
in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of
human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.
This announcement broadcasts international internship assignments with the Europe and
Central-Asia Section (ECAS). Located in the Americas, Europe and Central Asia Branch
(AECAB) of the Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division (FOTCD), which is
responsible for coordinating the assessment and implementation of the Office's engagement;
maintaining effective partnerships with Governments, regional organizations, national
stakeholders (e.g. national human rights institutions, non-government organizations, et cetera,
as well as United Nations Country Teams (UNCTs)); briefing and advising the High
Commissioner, the Secretary-General, United Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures Mandate
Holders on country situations; and providing follow-up to recommendations by the
international human rights system, including the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the
Europe and Central-Asia Section, in collaboration with other OHCHR entities, is responsible
for OHCHR's work at the country-level in the respective region of responsibility.
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, under the overall guidance of the Chief of the Section, the
intern reports to the Human Rights Officer in the assigned work unit. This assignment shall
be offered for an initial period of three (3) months, renewable for a combined period of six (6)
months, upon further approval by the supervisor, with an initial commencement date
ranging/starting from July 2021 to September 2021.

This internship is an UNPAID and full-time engagement that provides a framework through
which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the work of the United
Nations by way of their service within Secretariat entities. Applicants should have a

The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all
human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those
responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.
Daily responsibilities of the Europe and Central-Asia Section human rights intern will depend
on the individual's background and duties may include but are not limited to compiling basic
information, analyzing key issues, collecting information and documents received from
United Nations headquarters
- and field-level offices and, in particular, the intern may: review
relevant information and documents related to OHCHR work in order to acquire basic
understanding of the mandates, strategic policies, framework of programmes/ activities of the
organization; assist the Desk Officers (DOs) in maintaining contacts with concerned United
Nations Country Teams and relevant human rights offices, non-government organizations
(NGOs) and national human rights institutions (NHRIs) as well as OHCHR field offices in the
region; assist Europe and Central-Asia Section Desk Officers in the coordination of the
