**Position title**:Intern, Legal

**Location**:The intern will be based in the GAVI Alliance office in Geneva.

**Purpose of the position**:Support the Legal department.

**Duration**:Up to 6 months, commencing June or July 2024

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is a public-private partnership committed to saving children's lives and protecting people's health by increasing equitable use of vaccines in lower-income countries. Gavi brings together developing country and donor governments, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank, the vaccine industry, technical agencies, civil society, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other private sector partners. Gavi uses innovative finance mechanisms, including co-financing by recipient countries, to secure sustainable funding and adequate supply of quality vaccines. Since 2000, Gavi has contributed to the immunisation of nearly 1 billion children and the prevention of more than 16.2 million future deaths.

**BACKGROUND**

Gavi’s Legal Department is responsible for providing strategic legal services to the following:

- Gavi as a Swiss foundation with privileges and immunities of an international organisation in Switzerland;
- Gavi as the foreign equivalent of a US public charity in the United States; and
- International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm), a UK charity, which issues bonds in international capital markets to fund Gavi’s programmes.

Gavi’s Legal Department also provides legal advice on work continuing from the COVAX facility, which entailed a portfolio of agreements (and ensuing disputes) with over 150 governments and vaccine manufacturers, complex financing arrangements, the no-fault compensation programme and Humanitarian Buffer.

The intern in the Legal team is expected to:

- Develop skills and knowledge on the law applicable to an organization like GAVI and the responsibilities of an in-house lawyer in an international setting.
- Produce legal memoranda and research papers, legal correspondence and agreements.

**MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Assist with the daily business of the Legal department;
- Working directly with the different members of the Legal team, under the direct supervision of the Director, Legal or one of the Senior Legal Counsels;
- The primary role of the intern will be to assist with the timely review and preparation of contractual documentation of a varying nature (programmatic, goods and services, partner agreements, etc.), as well as legal memoranda, research papers and legal correspondence;
- Other tasks and research projects will be assigned on an ad hoc basis.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

Academic:

- The intern must either be currently enrolled in, or have completed in the last 12 months, a university degree programme in law.

Skills/Competencies:
The intern must have:

- An interest in international law and public health, prior experience working in an international and multicultural environment would be an advantage;
- Interest in transactional work;
- Excellent written skills;
- Ability to work well in a team, particularly in a multi-cultural environment.

Languages:

- Excellent knowledge of English;
- Working knowledge of French would be an advantage.
