The Cardiometabolic & Respiratory Research and Psychosocial Dynamics and Health Research Groups are currently looking for a PhD student 100%. The research groups aim to improve cardiometabolic and respiratory health and functioning determinants and support development and implementation of cost-effective personalized interventions for reducing disease burden. The PhD will be in the cardiometabolic research part of this group.

The project: The research project "Understanding Sex- and Gender-Sensitive Dynamics in Psychological Distress among Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury" is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation as part of the National Research Program "Gender Medicine and Health" (NRP 83). This innovative research project aims to transform mental health support for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) by developing a comprehensive, sex- and gender-sensitive approach to managing psychological distress during the critical transition from rehabilitation to community reintegration. The initiative seeks to improve mental health outcomes and quality of life for women and men living with SCI by translating cutting-edge research findings into practical, accessible, and personalized support strategies.

Responsibilities:

  1. Reviewing scientific literature
  2. Synthesize and analyze quantitative data
  3. Assist supervisors in various scientific and administrative activities
  4. Present own work at international conferences and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals
  5. Regular participation in the University's graduate program

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Master's degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Health Sciences, Psychology, or a closely related field
  2. Experience in project planning and execution as well as in patient-oriented and real-life data
  3. Medical knowledge and strong interest in mental health, gender medicine, spinal cord injury or neurotrauma
  4. Well-versed in statistical analysis and methodologies
  5. Excellent English skills (C1 level or higher) and working knowledge of German
  6. Ability to work efficiently, independently and in an interdisciplinary team

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program at the Graduate Health School at the University of Bern and affiliated with the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) at the University of Bern, and with the University Campus Nottwil.
