Postdoctoral Researcher for the Development of Superconducting Parametric Amplifier Technology

The Quantum Device Lab at ETH Zürich (ETHZ) led by Prof. Wallraff and the Hybrid Quantum Circuits Lab at EPFL led by Prof. Scarlino are seeking highly motivated candidates to join our collaborative effort, which aims to push the boundaries of quantum technology. We are looking for talented individuals to advance research on parametric amplifiers and their applications in quantum information processing. Join us in this pioneering project that offers the unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research and lay the groundwork to start a venture.

The positions are available starting from November 1, 2024. We will start reviewing applications on August 1, 2024, and continue the process until the positions are filled.

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

Project background
Our project is a joint initiative between the Quantum Device Lab at ETH Zürich and the Hybrid Quantum Circuits Lab at EPFL. This collaboration has secured an Innosuisse grant to advance the capabilities of parametric amplifiers based on superconducting circuits. Both labs have a proven track record of successful research on parametric amplifiers and will assemble a talented team to elevate this research to the next level.

We are offering three positions in our teams:

  • Postdoctoral Researcher: Responsible for optimizing the design of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) devices in simulations and experiments to enhance the capability of our amplifiers.
  • Fabrication Engineer: Main responsibilities include optimizing fabrication recipes and developing processes for a new generation of devices.
  • Systems Engineer: Responsible for optimizing the cryogenic packaging of the amplifiers, a key aspect for optimal device performance.

This collaborative effort combines the strengths and resources of both laboratories to advance the development of cutting-edge quantum technology. These positions are uniquely situated at the interface between academia and industry, providing an exciting opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research with diverse future career possibilities.

Job description

During the project, the successful candidates will be at the forefront of experimental research, both independently and as members of our research teams. You will be part of an international team working on quantum devices both at ETH Zürich and EPFL. Each position is initially limited to a term of eighteen months, with potential for extension. All three new team members will contribute to regular team meetings to report on project progress. Specifically, their responsibilities will include:

  • Simulation of parametric amplifier circuits using nonlinear optics techniques and harmonic balance, for example.
  • Design a new generation of devices using and refining our already existing python-based design packages.
  • Conducting advanced microwave measurements in state-of-the-art cryogenic setups assessing the gain profile and the quantum-limited noise performance of the amplifiers.

Your research will benefit from the comprehensive infrastructure, expertise, and collaborative network available within our research groups.

Profile

We are seeking candidates with a strong interest in quantum technology based on superconducting quantum circuits. Proficiency in English, in reading, writing, and discussing scientific material is essential, along with strong teamwork and excellent communication skills.

  • PhD in physics, quantum engineering, or electrical engineering, ideally with a focus on superconducting nonlinear devices
  • Extensive experience in simulating electrical circuits and devices
  • Strong general research skills with the ability to conduct independent research
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and with industry partners
  • Demonstrated initiative, results-oriented mindset, organizational skills, and creativity
  • Proficiency in Python programming

We offer

Joining our collaborative research project provides access to a stimulating and inspiring work environment at ETH Zurich and EPFL in Switzerland.

In line with our values, ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture. We promote equality of opportunity, value diversity, and nurture a working and learning environment in which the rights and dignity of all our staff and students are respected.
