At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Introduction As a Mechanical Technician, you will join the ATLAS Detector Operation Group at CERN and be part of the team that is maintaining and operating the ATLAS detector as well as supporting the detector upgrade. In this upgrade you will play a crucial role, taking part in significant installations of the detector systems in the challenging environment of the experimental cavern. Your versatility, hands‑on experience and strong team spirit will be essential to mastering the exciting challenges the upgrade presents. Functions Installation of new sub‑detectors involving specialised mechanical tooling and precise positioning. Installation of specific access platforms and standard scaffolding towers in various configurations. Participation to sub‑detector movements, which require accurate positioning and the operation of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, as well as electromechanical equipment. Definition of manufacturing methods. Manufacturing of parts and tooling using both conventional and CNC machines. Assembling of different components according to instructions, with adjustments to ensure optimal functionality. Application of mechanical measurement techniques and conventional dimensional metrology. Qualifications Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanics or a related field. Experience Demonstrated experience in on‑site installation of mechanical devices or structures. Strong experience in machining using both conventional and computer‑numerically‑controlled (CNC) machines. Good understanding of mechanical design drawings and tolerance specifications. Experience in scaffolding or personnel‑platform installation would be an asset. Initial experience in operation of hydraulic, pneumatic, or electromechanical equipment would be an asset. Technical competencies Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation. Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment. Manufacturing of mechanical parts. Programming and use of CNC machine‑tools and machining centres. Assembly and integration of experiments. Behavioural competencies Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities. Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements. Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations. Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting. Language skills Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language. Eligibility and closing date Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States. This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should normally reach us no later than 13.01.2026 at 23:59 CET. Employment Conditions Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited‑duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position. Working Hours: 40 hours per week Job Flexibility: Fully Onsite This position involves: Work in Radiation Areas. Interventions in underground installations. A valid driving licence. Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization. Exposure to risk of falling from heights during scaffolding assembly and dismantling operations. Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions. Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. Job grade: 3-4 Job reference: EP-ADO-PO-2025-265-LD Field of work: Mechanical Engineering Benchmark Job Title: Mechanical Technician Global Benefits A competitive salary (tax free), increasing in line with your years of relevant experience. 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure. Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health insurance scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund. Family, child and infant monthly allowances depending on your individual circumstances. A relocation package (installation grant, removal, travel expenses) depending on your individual circumstances. Possibility to extend your contract up to 8 years + eligibility for indefinite contract tenure.
