The Position

Are you passionate about shaping policy for the life sciences industry in Switzerland? Life sciences is the leading industry sector in Switzerland, contributing about 40% of the country’s export volume. As one of the leading companies in the sector, Roche has an important voice in shaping future policy developments for our industry. This role is a great opportunity for you to contribute to defining and delivering Roche’s contribution for a strong, sustainable and future-proof environment for life science companies in Switzerland.

The External Affairs Expert will be part of the External Affairs Team, Switzerland. The team strives to improve the political, legal and regulatory environment by interacting with a wide variety of collaborators.

The holder of this position will shape Roche’s strategy for innovation, research and education (ISE)-related issues in Switzerland. They will continuously monitor and analyze Swiss and cantonal legislative and policy developments in the fields of ISE that could impact Roche’s innovation strategy and help mitigate potential negative effects. The position will also contribute to strengthening Roche’s relations and interactions with relevant ISE institutions in Switzerland and support education-related activities at Roche. In close collaboration with colleagues in educational, technical and science functions, the position holder will derive appropriate strategies and activities to give Roche a strong voice in the innovation environment in Switzerland.

Your opportunities: ISE-policy

  • Based on the Roche 10-year ambitions, research strategy and policy priorities, develop ISE-related strategic priorities for Switzerland and elaborate proactive approaches to drive them forward.

  • Keep constant oversight of ongoing issues, developments and new trends in ISE policy in Switzerland.

  • Work closely with experts in the Roche Pharma and Diagnostics R&D organizations to shape Roche positions in response to the Swiss political discourse in the ISE field.

  • Serve as the point of contact for our colleagues in Research, when they are dealing with Swiss policy issues.

  • Lead the creation of ISE policy position papers and provide/contribute to briefings for senior leaders as they interact with associations, politicians and other ISE stakeholders on these issues.

  • Represent Roche in ISE groups of industry associations and vis-a-vis ISE partners.

  • Conduct analyses and derive proof points for our positions through data.

ISE-related mandates, collaborations and networks

  • Support the Head of External Affairs in her mandates at education institutions (University of Basel, University of Applied Sciences in Lucerne) by reviewing documents and preparing briefing papers.

  • Keep track of ongoing Roche collaborations with academic institutions in Switzerland, support new collaboration opportunities and help resolve potential issues.

  • Establish a close connection with Roche People and Culture teams involved in young talent development in Switzerland (e.g. Vocational Education, School Laboratory, University Relations, Sponsoring & Donations) to have good oversight of the company’s education-related activities and include them in strategic ISE considerations.

Who you are

You have a University degree in Political Sciences, Public Health, Life Sciences or related field. A relevant postgraduate degree is considered a plus. You bring at least 5 years of experience working in a senior role in the innovation, science and education environment, either in a company, private educational institution or in the public sector.

In addition, you bring the following:

  • Solid understanding of the Swiss political system and good knowledge of ISE regulation in Switzerland and internationally.

  • Passion for and knowledge of innovation and science-related topics in general.

  • Familiarity with the Swiss industry association landscape and way of working.

  • Comfortable and proficient in interactions with politicians and senior leaders; Existing network with Swiss ISE stakeholders is an asset.

  • Proven record of dealing with complex policy issues and the ability to communicate them clearly.

  • Strategic thinker with a broad perspective, strong analytical skills, ability to navigate and thrive in complex and fast-paced environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and complete multiple priorities and projects.

  • Fast learner, able to extract and quickly process key information, summarize key needs or interests of collaborators, and provide targeted and appropriate insights and recommendations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in German and English; verbal Swiss German and/or French skills are an asset.

  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset, strong relationship-building skills.

  • High degree of integrity and professionalism and independent working style.

This position is located in Basel or Rotkreuz, Switzerland.
