Postdoctoral Position: Local Structure of Disordered Single Crystals

The research group of Prof. Simonov is looking for a highly motivated PostDoc researcher with expertise in either computational materials science or experimental crystallography. The project focuses on understanding and modeling disorder in single crystals using advanced diffraction and computational methods. The position is available from 2025 onwards.
Project BackgroundOur group focuses on understanding and controlling disorder in single crystals. Typically, disorder is considered a sign of crystal imperfection, but we find that often it is beneficial for functional properties and also gives rise to fascinating physics. This project will focus on disorder driven by electron instabilities in single crystals. The exact project scope will be tailored to the candidate's expertise, focusing either on experimental measurements of diffuse scattering or on computational modeling of disordered systems.
The successful candidate will either:
- Develop and apply machine learning approaches to model disordered crystals and simulate their diffuse scattering patterns, OR
- Measure and analyze diffuse scattering from disordered materials on synchrotron and neutron radiation facilities.

ProfileWe are seeking candidates with one of the following profiles:
Computational Profile:
- PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related disciplines.
- Strong programming skills in Python, C++, etc.
- Experience in machine learning interatomic potentials and large-scale atomic simulations (>10,000 atoms).
- Understanding of diffraction-based structure analysis is an advantage.
- Experience with synchrotron or neutron diffraction measurements.
- Experience in characterization or modeling of disordered crystals using methods such as Monte Carlo, 3D-∆PDF, or similar approaches.
- Programming skills for data analysis are an advantage.
