CMS Operations and Project Engineer (EP-CMX-SCI-2025-61-GRAE)
  • Full-time

Your responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated Project Engineer to oversee major infrastructure upgrade projects within the CMS Experimental area. In this role, you will act as the project coordinator, organising and supervising various stakeholders including CERN engineering teams and external contractors to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet the required specifications. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Finalising Surface Facilities: You will coordinate the surface facilities for the CMS ECAL and HGCAL Phase 2 upgrade projects. This involves managing the installation of essential services such as electrical systems, civil engineering works, cooling and ventilation.
  • Underground Upgrades: Working alongside a senior CERN staff member, you will help coordinate Phase 2 upgrades in the underground CMS service cavern, including the installation of new CO2 cooling plants.

In addition to these project management duties, you will provide engineering support by creating detailed layouts and 3D drawings for other CMS infrastructure projects. This position offers an excellent opportunity for an early career professional to gain hands-on experience managing complex engineering projects while contributing to high-profile initiatives. If you are proactive, eager to develop your skills, and passionate about engineering, we would love to hear from you.

Your profile

Skills

  • Strong organisational abilities, budget control, risk management, and scheduling. Experience in chairing meetings and reporting on project progress.
  • Proficient in interpreting technical drawings and CAD. Experience in creating 2D/3D layouts and integrating new systems into existing infrastructure.

  • Excellent communication skills for liaising with internal teams and external contractors. Skilled in documentation and report writing.
  • Identifying and resolving technical issues while ensuring work aligns with specifications.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and manage relationships.
  • Experience in scientific or complex infrastructure environments (like CERN) is a plus.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Exposure to risk of falling from heights during scaffolding assembly and dismantling operations.
  • Use of certain mobile work equipment or equipment used for lifting loads (lifting equipment, bridge cranes, aerial work platforms, etc.) requiring a driving authorization.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
