  • Full-time

Your responsibilities

As an Electrical Engineer in the Cabling Section within the Electrical Engineering Group, you will play a key role in expanding, strengthening, and maintaining signal and power cable installations required for various systems within the CERN accelerators.

You will contribute to the consolidation of CERN's North Experimental Area. Built in the 1970s, this unique facility spans 60,000 m² and includes 7 km of beam lines, requiring essential upgrades to continue supporting key physics experiments and R&D programmes.

In performing your duties, you will have the opportunity to manage cabling projects, design signal and power cable systems, and collaborate with experts in various equipment domains.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Analysing requests for new cable circuits and modifications to existing ones.
  • Conducting technical studies, including ampacity calculations, cable routing, and material selection.
  • Ensuring compliance of cabling systems with applicable standards, rules, and regulations.
  • Defining project budgets and schedules.
  • Preparing and reviewing project documentation.
  • Participating in project, coordination, and integration meetings.
  • Preparing execution documentation for CERN's electrical installation contractors.
  • Organising, supervising, and ensuring safety on worksites, involving interactions with contractors and CERN users from other groups and departments.
  • Providing thorough and timely project reporting.
  • Developing quality plans and procedures.

This role includes team supervision responsibilities.

Your profile

Skills

  • Experience in managing electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in designing and installing signal and power cables, including their associated connectors.
  • Excellent team-working attitude.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.
  • You have a professional background in Electrical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Job closing date: extended to 30.03.2025 at 23:59 CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Exposure to ionizing radiation and classified as category A.
  • Operations on electrical installations or in their vicinity (over 1000 Volt AC or 1500 Volt DC) requiring a specific authorization.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

Field of work: Electrical or Electronics Engineering

What we offer

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6287 and 6911 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.

  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
