Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Fellow in Political Science or Related Fields with Focus on East Africa (2 years, 50%)
Funded in the context of Project FamilEA: The Remaking of the Family in East Africa, a research project sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2023-2027, ref.CRSII5_213547).
Project FamilEA seeks to understand the dynamics of family transformation in East Africa (Kenya and Uganda) by combining four strategies:
- Building a common interdisciplinary conceptual foundation;
- Combining a range of methods from across the social sciences and the humanities to build a common core dataset;
- Implementing, in two neighbouring countries with distinct family patterns, a comparative study design involving men and women, younger and middle-aged adults, capital cities and countryside, and various socio-economic groups and life trajectories;
- Involving discipline-specific individual projects that will stand in close dialogue with one another and with the core theory and dataset.
FamilEA’s core data includes a quantitative-qualitative survey, conducted in the two East African capitals of Kampala and Nairobi, which documents the size and changing structure of families along a number of parameters: co-residence, kinship, subjective importance, frequency of contacts, and physical distance. The survey further documents exchanges, obligations, rights, and conflicts between family members.
The postdoctoral fellow will help to unravel the tensions between legal/policy dispositions, on the one hand, and social realities on the other hand. Their work, developed through the prism of an individual project, will synthesize major trends in existing family-related policies in East Africa and draw attention to entanglements between legislation, public policies, and on-the-ground actions that affect family arrangements and compositions. They will engage FamilEA’s qualitative-quantitative survey data and help to set the forms of observed family constellations against those recognized within political and policy discourse.
In addition to the scholarly input of their individual project, the postdoctoral fellow will work closely with the FamilEA team, help to advance the project’s practical objectives related to policy outreach, translating the project’s findings into concrete recommendations, for example, by drawing attention to under-recognized family vulnerabilities that could benefit from improved public policies/legal reforms. To this end, the fellow will be also be tasked with directly engaging policy stakeholders—with whom dialogue already commenced early on in the project—and to formulate evidence-based policy recommendations.
The successful candidate is expected to join the FamilEA team in Geneva on the 1st of June, to attend FamilEA’s upcoming workshop in Nairobi (8-10th July 2025), and to conduct individual fieldwork in Nairobi and Kampala.
