Purpose of consultancy
The consultant will play a pivotal role in supporting the initial launch and operationalization of the C&H investments, ensuring alignment with Unitaid's strategic objectives. With a blend of analytical expertise, climate-specific skills, and a solutions-oriented approach, the consultant will provide both technical input and strategic guidance. This will enable Unitaid to shape its initial portfolio of climate-smart health products, positioning the organization to deliver impactful, scalable solutions that address the challenges at the intersection of climate change and global health.
Background
Unitaid is focused on driving equitable access to climate-smart health products through its 2023-2027 strategy. As part of this strategic direction, the organization aims to minimize the climate footprint of health products across their full lifecycle, from production to disposal, while simultaneously strengthening the resilience of global supply chains. In alignment with Unitaid's 2025 priorities, the organization is looking to operationalize its Climate & Health investment portfolio, including the development of key investment cases to be presented to funding organizations and to contribute to the organization's resource mobilization efforts.
Deliverables
The Consultant Is Expected To Complete The Following Deliverables:
- Support to Investment Launch and Management: Collaborate with the Sustainability Manager, Climate and Health to assist in the development of C&H investments, providing both technical and strategic contributions. This includes informing the scoping, design, and rollout of investment opportunities, ensuring alignment with Unitaid's C&H strategic priorities and achieving investment milestones for 2025.
- Research and Analysis: Conduct comprehensive technical reviews and analyses of climate and health-related research, technology landscape and market trends. The consultant will identify and assess potential opportunities for investment design and scoping within the C&H space, contributing critical insights to shape future investment decisions and strategies.
- Investment Proposal Development: Provide expert technical input in the drafting and refinement of investment proposals, ensuring they are technically robust, strategically aligned, and well-justified with regards to strategic relevance, impact, value of money and climate scientific standards and best practices. The consultant will assist in developing strong proposals that will support Unitaid's resource mobilization efforts in Climate and Health.
Educational Qualifications:
Essential:
Advanced university degree in sustainability, environmental/natural science, business administration, general engineering, or a related field.
Desirable:
Degree, diploma, or certification in environmental sustainability, sustainable product manufacturing, supply chains with a focus on environment/climate change.
Experience
Essential:
- Over 10 years of cumulative professional experience spanning the private, public, or development sectors, and combining global, national, and industry-specific expertise relevant to the role.
- Extensive background in environmental sustainability, with progressively increasing responsibilities in leading large-scale sustainability programs and initiatives.
- Experience in mitigation and decarbonization projects.
- Proven experience in designing, leading, and delivering advanced analyses to support investment decisions, business and investment case development.
- Experience in demonstrating an understanding of climate and health challenges related to Unitaid's work.
- Relevant experience at the intersection of climate and health.
- Experience working with products within Unitaid's portfolio or relevant global health and product organizations, industries, or supply chains.
- Proven experience in leading decarbonization projects, providing technical support to stakeholders, and managing environmental risk assessments or climate adaptation initiatives, particularly in relation to global and regional supply chains and healthcare products.
- Deep understanding of Unitaid's mission, portfolio, and relevant regulations.
- Strong knowledge of global environmental sustainability, key frameworks, and best practices.
- Understanding of health product markets and sustainability challenges, particularly in Low and Middle-Income Countries, and insights into global supply chains.
- Skilled in analyzing product investments and markets with a focus on sustainability.
- Ability to interpret technical studies, life cycle assessments, and ESG standards.
- Excellent collaboration and influencing skills to drive results in dynamic teams.
- Sound judgment and a strong curiosity about climate issues and continuous learning.
- Proficient in writing technical reports for senior audiences.
Languages and level required (Basic/Intermediate/Expert):

Remuneration and budget (travel costs are excluded):
Band level C: USD 10,000 – 12,500 per month

The Consultant shall be solely responsible for withholding and paying any taxes, duties, social security contributions and any other contributions which are applicable to the Consultant in in each location/jurisdiction in which the work hereunder is performed, and the Consultant shall not be entitled to any reimbursement thereof by WHO.
