Company Description At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Job Description In this role you will support the maintenance and operation of the ATLAS superconducting magnets. Furthermore, you will support R&D efforts for the benefit of present and future superconducting detector magnets. Key Tasks Join a team of experts who ensure the smooth operation of the ATLAS superconducting magnets, as well as various other superconducting detector magnets at CERN. Prepare maintenance works for the annual end‑of‑the‑year maintenance period and the long shutdown periods, and execute these works, typically in a hands‑on capacity. Contribute to Research and Development of technologies for superconducting detector magnets and associated technologies through the CERN Experimental PhysicsR&D programme. Contribute to the education of the new generation of students and graduates in the field of superconducting detector magnet technology. Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Experience Strong hands‑on competence Hands‑on maintenance practice Ability to fabricate and assemble equipment Preparation of mechanical designs and drawings, using CAD design software Pluses Experience with superconductivity, superconducting magnets, and cryogenics Operation of superconducting magnets and associated systems, including cryogenics, coils, power converters, current leads, and busbars. Ability to perform finite‑element‑based mechanical simulations, using for example Ansys or COMSOL. Technical competencies Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment Configuration and use of information management systems: In particular CAD design software such as CATIA Production of 2D drawings and 3D models Behavioural competencies Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; driving work / projects along and seeing them through to their conclusion; taking appropriate corrective actions and adapting work / project plans if necessary. Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities; contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues. Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements; readily accepting new tasks or work/projects; being willing to work on different projects simultaneously.
