Genetically Modified Animals Manager Kanton Bern – 80‑100% 2‑year contract (possible extension). Start date: April 1 2026 or by appointment. Position Overview The Experimental Animal Center (EAC) of the University of Bern is responsible for in‑vivo research and animal care. The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the “Culture of Care” and compliance with guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy. Area of Responsibility Your main duty is supervision of all genetically modified or mutant animals of the EAC within the framework of the legally required distress monitoring of GM animals (in accordance with Art. 124 of the Swiss Animal Welfare Ordinance and Art. 12 of the Animal Experiments Ordinance). The role reports to the Head of EAC. This Includes Advice and support for researchers in creating nomenclature‑compliant strain names and correctly completing the GM data sheets and forms M. Upload of completed documents, data sheets and forms M to the animal management systems (Pyrat, Animex). Supervision of the GM lines of the EAC: regular checks via the animal management system on the status of the distress monitoring of the animal lines and controls in the animal facilities of the EAC regarding the implementation of stress‑reducing measures. Support to the Facility Heads for the genetic monitoring of the lines. Regular communication with the Heads of EAC, central and decentral Animal Facilities, Animal Welfare Officer and Cantonal Veterinary Authorities. Requirements Degree in veterinary medicine or natural sciences/biology and a PhD is ideal. Robust knowledge of genetic modifications and breeding in experimental rodents. Further training/experience in the field of animal science. Experience in carrying out distress monitoring is an advantage. Advanced knowledge and experience with animal management programs (e.g. Pyrat, e‑rats); proficient with Word and Excel office applications. Reliable, flexible, team player, well‑organised and service‑oriented with quick comprehension and independent, careful, diligent way of working. Comfortable in English and German.
