Opto-Mechanical Lead Engineer Mission

The principal roles of the Opto-Mechanical Lead Engineer:

  • Develop the opto-mechanical assemblies for the optical testing of robotic positioners for astronomy (hardware and software);
  • Measure, characterize and calibrate the optical performance of the micro-robots on the test benches (ex. optical fibers and mirrors characterization);
  • Monitor the progress of the projects and set the deadlines;
  • Manage projects’ deliverables and scheduling;
  • Coordinate with the Project Office;
  • Collaborate with industrial and international academic partners.
Main duties and responsibilities

The primary duties and responsibilitiesare to develop the opto-mechanical aspects of robotic positioner used in optical/near-infrared telescopes, as well as to manage major astronomical instruments projects. EPFL is involved in the design, procurement, assembly and testing of systems including fiber positioning units, mirror/lens systems or a combination of both. In particular, EPFL Astrobots Group is involved in future projects using miniaturized robots for massive multi-fibers spectroscopy projects (e.g. Spec-S5, MUST, WST), to the novelfocal plane system fortheMOSAICinstrument for theELT, and to steerable relay optics of BlueMUSE for the VLT.

Profile

The ideal candidate should hold an HES orEPF degree in Microtechnic or Optical Engineeringwith a few years of experience of project driven work (whether in a student led project or at professional level).

  • Hands-on experience on optical components (ex. optical fibers, mirrors);
  • Good knowledge of optical software (ex. Zemax);
  • Good knowledge of CAD software (ex. Solidworks, Creo);
  • Good knowledge of Matlab, Python and C programming;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Proven creative and open-minded to seek out solutions and alternatives;
  • Excellentorganizationalskills and attention to details;
  • Proven experience of project management;
  • Good to have: Knowledge of project management softwares (ex. MS Project);
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills;
  • Team spirit.
