Mechanical Engineer (Ultra-High Vacuum) At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers probe the fundamental structure of the universe using the world’s largest scientific instruments. This role designs, prototypes and industrialises ultra‑high‑vacuum components for accelerator upgrades, delivering install‑ready hardware that meets rigorous safety and quality standards. Functions Design and evaluate the structural performance of high‑vacuum equipment using finite element modelling (FEM) codes, focusing on buckling and vibrational behaviour. Select appropriate and affordable materials and fabrication techniques for accelerator vacuum components. Advance equipment from prototyping to industrial production, authoring technical specifications and coordinating with industrial suppliers and service contractors. Implement and monitor QA/QC programmes for industrial contracts. Identify new collaboration opportunities and in‑kind contributions with external institutes and industry partners. Document results in reports, scientific publications and presentations. Qualifications Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering. A PhD in Structural Mechanics or a related field is an asset. Experience Proven experience in the design and simulation of complex mechanical systems. Experience preparing and implementing QA/QC protocols. Demonstrated experience drafting technical specifications and monitoring technical contracts with industrial suppliers. Experience in scientific writing and presenting technical results at management and scientific forums. Knowledge of standard high and ultra‑high‑vacuum components and piping is an advantage. Knowledge of ultra‑high‑vacuum sealing techniques and of the operation and maintenance of ultra‑high‑vacuum systems is an advantage. Technical Competencies Design and analysis of mechanical structures (static, dynamic, modal and vibration). Drafting of commercial documents for supply or service contracts. Specification and follow‑up of the technical aspects of a contract. Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation. Knowledge and application of conventional dimensional metrology. Design and analysis of high‑vacuum systems. Behavioural Competencies Working in teams – cooperating constructively with others and balancing personal and team goals. Communicating effectively – ensuring information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented. Achieving results – defining clear objectives, milestones and deliverables before initiating work. Solving problems – testing solutions for long‑term suitability and verifying them with all stakeholders. Managing self – maintaining a positive outlook in difficult situations and demonstrating resilience and persistence. Language Skills Spoken and written English. Commitment to learn French.
