Presentation

The Faculty of Geosciences and Environment (FGSE) of the University of Lausanne invites applications for the position of Field Instrumentation Engineer within the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE). The person recruited will work in collaboration with the applied geophysics group to develop state-of-the-art, customized instrumentation for a variety of geophysical field experiments. They will also provide field support for geophysical data acquisition and monitoring campaigns. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background, particularly in electronics and instrumentation, with some experience on firmware and device control software development.

They will have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, and be able to collaborate with multiple groups and to create bridges across topics. An ability to manage complex engineering tasks autonomously is also required.

Activity rate: 80%

Your responsibilities

40% of your time will be devoted to the development, maintenance, and calibration of novel or customized geophysical field instruments, including the programming of base-level software to operate these instruments and transfer the corresponding data.

25% of your time will be devoted to field support for geophysical data acquisition and monitoring campaigns, and the associated data management.

15% of your time will be devoted to user training and participation in collaborative research projects.

Your qualifications

You must hold a Master's degree in engineering, preferably electrical or mechanical, or a Bachelor's degree in engineering with extensive related work experience. Some familiarity with geophysics or more broadly with Earth and/or environmental sciences is an asset. Some experience with drones is also beneficial.

A valid driving license in Switzerland is necessary upon starting the position. You should be comfortable working in remote mountain environments and in difficult terrain.
