Underwriter - Financial Lines

For our client, an international insurance group, we are looking for an underwriter to underwrite a Financial Lines account within the International Financial Lines team and provide counsel and advice on underwriting and market issues. Provide technical expertise in this business area and maintain and improve market reputation of the company brand.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Underwriting
    1. Develop and underwrite a profitable portfolio of Financial Lines business as part of the Financial Lines DACH team.
    2. Structure tailor-made solutions by considering the team underwriting parameters and underwriting policy and using underwriting knowledge and experience to win new business and retain existing.
    3. Monitor premiums, costs and claims ratios per contract and take corrective measures if necessary to ensure long term profitability at account level.
    4. Evaluate appropriate risk premium by considering the risk costs, reinsurance cessions, capital exposure as well as the underwriting and general administration costs to ensure profitability, using rating models as applicable.
    5. Monitor peer underwriters in their daily work to ensure profitability as well as efficient and cost effective administration of the Continental Europe Financial Lines account.
    6. Monitor and supervise assistants in their daily work to ensure compliance with underwriting philosophy and policy and consistency within the team and Specialty Risks.
    7. Comply with company's underwriting control standards for business written through Lloyd's, the company's European subsidiaries or internal MGAs.
    8. Develop a good working relationship with the claims managers on this class of business.
  2. Client Management
    1. Advise, assist and service clients on insurance and risk matters to ensure clients' satisfaction.
    2. Foster positive relationships with clients to get a mutual understanding of both their and the company's needs.
    3. Maintenance of good business relationships with brokers.
    4. Maintain awareness of overall product range and take advantages of opportunities to introduce other products to clients.
  3. General
    1. Leverage networking opportunities within the business to develop standardised underwriting policy and best practice within the company.
    2. Develop best practice and disseminate business and class knowledge within the International Financial Lines and Specialty Risks teams.
    3. Work with peers within International Financial Lines and Specialty Risks to maximise business opportunities and profitability within the department. This will include but not be limited to sharing market information, marketing sources and cross selling opportunities.
    4. Share and gather knowledge within the Group to ensure dissemination of best practice and maximise business opportunities and profitability across the Group.
    5. Production of presentations and marketing literature as required.
    6. Production of business plans/research documents for the Continental Europe Financial Lines account as required.

This may include, amongst others, underwriting control standards, claims control standards, other standards and customer relationship management.
  6. Carry out additional responsibilities as individually notified, either through your objectives or through the learning management system. These may include membership of any committees or working groups.

Personal Specification:

  1. Skills and Abilities
    1. General commercial and financial knowledge.
    2. Possess underwriting ability.
    3. Accurate and numerate.
    4. Computer skills – good working knowledge of MS Office, advanced Excel skills.
    5. Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
    6. Able to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing.
    7. Motivational skills, team worker as well as able to work on own initiative.
    8. Ability to manage time, meet deadlines and prioritise.
    9. Fluency in German and English, additional ability with French is advantageous.
  2. Knowledge and Experience
    1. Experience of Financial Lines underwriting.
    2. Good knowledge of Swiss financial lines market.
    3. Thorough knowledge of underwriting policy, philosophy and practice.
    4. Advanced knowledge of underwriting processes and systems.
    5. Client service experience.
