Mechanical Engineer for AWAKE (BE-GM-HPA-2025-33-GRAP)
  • Full-time

Your responsibilities

Are you a Mechanical Engineer eager to work on innovative alignment solutions in a world-class research environment? As part of the AWAKE Project at CERN, you will play a key role in the development, deployment, and commissioning of precision adjustment platforms for the new 150 MeV AWAKE electron beamline.

You will join the Geodetic Metrology group and work within the High precision alignment team to support their mission of designing, implementing, operating, and analysing 3D alignment solutions with micrometric accuracy for accelerator components, transfer lines, and experimental areas, including the Machine Detector Interface geodetic link.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will:

  • Develop and qualify mechanical alignment solutions, ensuring precision for beamline components.
  • Lead the procurement and reception of 17 adjustment platform units.
  • Oversee deployment, installation, and commissioning of the platforms in the tunnel environment.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, and scientists to optimize alignment performance.

Your profile

Skills

Required:

  • Experience in designing mechanical structures and machines.
  • Experience in preparing manufacturing drawings and related documentation, with knowledge of ISO GD&T.
  • Experience in the procurement, assembly, and commissioning of mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of design and application of micrometric alignment systems would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of motion mechatronics would be an asset.
  • Fluent in English; the ability to work in French would be an advantage.
  • You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Use of certain mobile work equipment or equipment used for lifting loads (lifting equipment, bridge cranes, aerial work platforms, etc.) requiring a driving authorization.
  • Operations on electrical installations or in their vicinity (over 1000 Volt AC or 1500 Volt DC) requiring a specific authorization.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

Job reference: BE-GM-HPA-2025-33-GRAP

Field of work: Mechanical Engineering

What we offer

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6287 and 6911 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
